*Sigh* You can’t even hear my mews informing you the crumbly food-bits that don’t have the nice smells are all that’s left in the feeding bowls. Pathetic. No proper feline wants to eat that. But then, you hardly hear my mews these days anyway…
No matter, I’m a great hunter, master of the stand-off, you’d be surprised how long I can sit here swishing my tail and glaring unapprovingly. All things considered, it still beats going out to catch a meal in that much cold stuff…

The house is so quiet. And the worst part is that I can’t find the Wrinkly One anywhere.

In the end, the Wrinkly One is just gone. She would never leave the den with the cat bowls not nice and full, so I know something is very wrong.
*gasp!* Wrinkly One!
…But it’s not the Wrinkly One. Only her kit returns to the den.
She seems upset…

For now, I guess we just have to keep believing that will be the case. Your pets are soft and comforting, but only the Wrinkly One knows that special place right behind my ear to scratch.

One does have to wonder what it must look like to a pet when there is no way to explain to them what is going on and give them context; a reader can read between the lines and get the context of the situation, but for the animal, I imagine they’d just be confused when their human is suddenly not around. It’s these things I try to think about when I write for Shadow.

This has made me think about what my dog will go thru when I am no longer around starting in September. My husband I will be running separate households so I can get my daughter into a different better school. We will be home a lot but I’m sure it will be confusing for her.

Shadow is deeply attached to Rose. When she’s suddenly missing from his environment when she’s typically around, it does lead him to a lot of confusion. At least he seems pretty keen on the best places to check! (Well, except checking inside the cat tent, but ya know… he tries.)

He uses to see her everyday so she’s among him that’s true but I never noticed his deep attachement to her.

The situation may not be what you think it is. When the Reaper comes for Rose, everyone will know it. Had Shadow not gotten help so quickly, that could have very easily been the result, though.
From Shadow’s perspective, he has no way of understanding what exactly is going on; where his owner is, why she is gone, if or when she is coming back, so for him, it is as if she is simply gone, causing an area of confusion in his environment. I imagine just going on vacation must be similar to a pet. You can’t sit them down and explain, “I’m just going to be gone for four days, and then I’ll be back!” They’ll just simply see you missing for four days… and then suddenly be back.

He looked in the places that seemed natural hiding spots (to his kitty brain), or where Rose usually is. He is definitely confused suddenly having her gone.
